From center to periphery, the coin is generally well struck with just a hint of weakness at the curves of the wings where they leave the shield. Lot 1291
1853. Arrows. NGC graded MS-65. Well struck with a hint of gold tone. What is most noticeable when one first examines this Gem 1853 With Arrows Seated Dime is its thick, vibrant mint luster -- it swirls around each side unimpeded by abrasions and untouched by even a hint of discoloration. A coin of singular beauty and importance to the collector and numismatist. A dullish impression was left by the recoil of the dies that struck many 1853 dimes, however, we're pleased to see and report that this is a splendid exception to that rule. The devices are boldly struck. Pop 64; 52 finer.
Estimated Value $1,600 - 1,700.

Lot 1293
1879. PCGS graded Proof 65. Lovely blue and lilac toning on both sides. Only 1,100 struck. This is a lovely, nicely reflective Gem Proof, both sides being original with enviable characteristics that should attract many bidders. That said, the strike is also strong, in fact, keen-edged throughout, with clear definition to the high points. Minor silver coin totals fell dramatically in 1879-81, with the Dime-sized coins being notably scarce in Mint condition. This tends to put added collector pressure on the Proofs. Pop 27; 14 in 66; 7 in 67 (PCGS # 4776) .

Lot 1295
1882. NGC graded Proof 68 Cameo. A fully untoned and superlative gem. Only 1,100 Proofs struck. Swirls of mirror-deep luster flicker when light hits the coin, while the richer texture than average on frosty devices draws attention. Next a word or two about the strike. What inspection shows is that the pressure transmitted from the die to the blank left behind a fantastic razor-sharp impression. All design elements are bold: Liberty's gown and hair, the shield as well as all legends, and on the reverse, Longacre's imaginative Cereal Wreath rises up in sharp, cameo relief against a delightfully sleek field. Pop 3; none finer at NGC.

The 1911 Proof shares the distinction with several dates in the 1890s (1896 & 1898 in particular) along with 1909 & 1910 in featuring the most attractive two-tone frost on the Proof dimes of their respective years. 1916. NGC graded MS-68 Full Bands. Star. A frosty white Superb Gem. Both the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints coined fairly large quantities of the new dimes during the first months of 1916. The output of the Denver Mint was curtailed, as that facility struggled to meet an extreme demand for quarter dollars. All the same, it is a privilege for us to offer one of only 2 such examples graded by NGC in MS68 Full Bands. Swimming in mint brilliance over each side of this sharply made Gem the fields and devices are a blizzard of whiteness. Both the peripheries and the central reverse are also impressive for their sharpness of strike, and the frosty textured surfaces are unlike those of 1917 and later on the 1916 issue. Pop 2; none finer at NGC .

1916. PCGS graded MS-66 Full Bands. Boldly struck and mostly white with blazing fresh luster. The somewhat wide rims are characteristic of 1916-P (and 1916-D) Mercury dimes. They are more properly termed Winged Liberty Head dimes, since the Roman god Mercury had wings on his feet and didn't wear a Liberty cap. But the Mercury name sticks and that is how these have lovingly come down to us in the 21st Century (PCGS # 4905) .

Lot 1312
1916-D. PCGS graded MS-63 Full Bands. Well struck and lightly toned. A popular key date. The federal government's production of only 264,000 Dimes at the Denver Mint in 1916 appears to have created a feeding frenzy among contemporary coin collectors when they discovered how scarce these coins truly were. Since quality control was still good for the sake of the new design, most 1916-P,D, and S Mercury dimes emerged from the presses with defined central and peripheral devices. Later issues would deteriorate as quality control lapsed. The present example and exemplar of Choice MS63 quality. Both sides are fully struck in all areas with crisp, well rounded crossbands. The surfaces are nicely frosted beneath delicate shades leaving much of the silvery iridescence intact and gleaming (PCGS # 4907) .

1921-D. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. Well struck and white with glinting luster throughout the surfaces. The bands are almost full. 1921 and 1921-D are scarcer issues in the 1920s. After the boomtime conditions of 1917-18, things continued along fine in 1919-20 in the aftermath of the Great War Armistice of 11/11/1918, but then a recession set in in 1921 which caused the banks to request fewer circulating coins from the Treasury. The Treasury in turn ordered the Mints to reduce production as evidenced by the much lower mintage this year in most denominations except silver dollars. Pop 22; 52 finer (PCGS # 4936) .
